October 5, 1927 - April 23, 2022
Edwin Willard Koetz, age 94, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at Mount Carmel East Hospital on April 23,2022. Ed was born on October 5, 1927 to the late John Wesley and Agnes (Neidermeyer) Koetz in Columbus, OH. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marilyn (Taylor) Koetz; brother John T. (Mary Kay) Koetz and sister MaryEllen (Bernard) Frickie. Ed is survived by his children Debbi Kelly (Larry Thorne), Kristin (Richard) Brant, and John W. (Libby) Koetz; grandchildren Edwin Kelly, Kristy (Rob) Sanderson, Benjamin Brant (Kim Nydick), Jason (Beth) Brant, Lee (Jared) Kiesel, Joshua Koetz, Nicholas Koetz; great grandchildren Andrew, Josiah, Jonathan, & Kaitlyn Kelly, Jeffery & William Desich, Thomas & Logan Sanderson, Wesley & Spencer Kiesel and many nieces and nephews. Ed grew up in German Village and graduated from South High School. Ed met the love of his life, Marilyn, when they were 15 and they married at First Congregational Church when they were 19. He worked for Isaly’s cheese at the Central market, was co-owner of a gas station of S. Third Street and started in insurance as a claims adjustor for Ohio Casualty Insurance Co. He handled claims for Bill (W.E.) Davis and became an agent with Bill, eventually buying the agency in 1962. Ed kept the name, but moved the downtown agency to BGerman Village where it stayed for over 25 years. The W.E. Davis Insurance Agency is still family owed (Ed’s son and grandson) and is now located in the Brewery District. In retirement Ed and Marilyn became snowbirds and bought a condo in Florida. Ed loved to work with his hands and kept active by gardening and remodeling projects. Ed was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church and served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and hosted the 60+ Group with Marilyn. He was most proud of being the longest serving member at First Church for the last several years. Marilyn and Ed loved their family, which resulted in many family traditions: Friday nights babysitting the grandkids, hosting family dinners every Sunday, and yearly vacations to the beach. Friends and family are invited to the service on Saturday, April 30th at 10:30 AM with Emily Corzine officiating (First Congregational Church) at Union Cemetery, 3349 Olentangy River Road, Columbus 43202 in the mausoleum. Friends and family are also invited to celebrate Ed’s life at Valters at the Maennechor at 976 S. High Street in German Village at 12:00. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Good Samaritan Mission at First Congregational Church at 444 E. Broad Street, Columbus Ohio 43215. Online condolences available O.R. Woodyard.
