Chapin Cole Brooks, beloved father and grandfather, passed away of natural causes in Tucson, AZ on July 11, 2020. Chapin was born on August 6, 1935 in Columbus, OH to Gwendolyn May (Odell) and Earle Lyman Brooks, I; the eldest of four children. He attended Grandview Heights High School but dropped out in April 1953 to enlist in the United States Navy. The Navy trained Chapin as a shipboard steam-propulsion specialist (Machinist's Mate) and he rose rapidly through the ranks while serving in heavy cruisers and destroyers. Chapin was promoted to chief petty officer in May 1963. During his first enlistment Chapin completed the remaining necessary courses and was awarded a high school diploma by his high school. Later he earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Chapman University, Orange, CA and an MBA from National University, San Diego, CA. In 1958 Chapin married Eula Jeanne Sprott in Pascagoula, MS. Chapin often stated that he was fortunate to have married the perfect Navy wife. "Jeanne" bore him three children and was with him for the remainder of his Naval career. In October 1964, Chapin was commissioned as ensign, USN. He served for 10 years as a commissioned officer with service in-country in Viet Nam and several Navy ships. Chapin retired from the Navy in July 1975 with the permanent rank of lieutenant commander, USN (Ret). After retirement from military service Chapin worked at domestic and foreign shipyards as a military and civilian ship-overhaul planning specialist. Chapin retired fully in 1985 and moved to Las Vegas, NV which was his home for the next 21 years. A physical fitness enthusiast, he daily jogged many miles through the south-west quadrant of Las Vegas. In 2006, Chapin moved to Tucson, AZ which remained his home until his death. Chapin was a Libertarian. He believed that we should not interfere in the lives of others; that all people should be free to live their lives in the manners in which they gained the most satisfaction, and do so without criticism from other individuals, or from any government entity. Chapin is survived by his three children, Edward in Washington State, Londi (Brooks) Sullivan in California and Phillip in Texas and five grandchildren. Chapin will repose next to his father at the Brooks family plot at Sunset Cemetery, 6959 West Broad Street, Galloway, OH 43119. Graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 9am.
