Earle Eugene "Gene" Wilson, age 99 years, 3 months, 1 day, passed quietly at The Inn at Winchester Trail on January 28, 2018. Retired Dairy Farmer. Born October 27, 1918 to the late Earl & Edith (Courtright) Wilson. Graduate of Groveport High School in 1936, 84 year member of the Groveport Presbyterian Church, 73 year member of the Groveport Masonic Lodge #240 F&AM, member of Walnut Chapter #172, R.A.M., 65 year member of the Groveport-Madison Lions Club, 65 year member of the Boy Scouts of America including 28 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 71 in Groveport, and a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He lived all but the last two months of his life on the farm where he was born. In his church, he served as Sunday School Superintendent, an Elder for 74 years, a member of the choir for more than 60 years, and Clerk of Session for 15 years. In Scouting, he attended the 1973 National Jamboree with a group of five scouts, and completed a Philmont trek in 1991. As Scoutmaster, he assisted 47 young men to reach the rank of Eagle Scout, and took the troop to Summer Camp each of those 28 years, often making trips home early in the morning to milk his herd of cows. He received the Scouter's Key, earned the Wood Badge Training Award, and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, God & Service Award, Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award, and the Vigil Honor. In 1980, he was one of the central Ohio recipients of the Jefferson Award for Public Service, and in 1987, he was inducted into the Groveport-Madison High School Hall of Fame. He powerfully influenced the lives of hundreds of young men through the Scouting program. His example of a life of servant leadership was one worthy of the emulation of any and all. Preceded in death by sisters Alice Courtright Poth, Clara Lauretta Leidy, Edith Eloise Rohr, Mary Elnora Stevenson & Martha Elizabeth Fisher; brother George Andrew Wilson; nieces Edith Emma Wildermuth & Lois Rohr; nephew William Earl Stevenson. Survived by nieces Marilyn Lee Carver, Marion; Barbara Alice Cullison, Logan; Carol Ann Keathly, Hansville, Washington; Donna Jean Mallow, Clarksburg; Mary Louise Anson, Waynesboro, Virginia; nephew Thomas Wilson Stevenson, Canal Winchester; 6 great-nieces, 3 great nephews, several great-great-nieces and nephews.
