Ernestine Patterson Scott, Today, the woman who gave me my first kiss, gave me her last. On May 17, 2012 my precious mother, Ernestine Patterson Scott, passed away. My mother loved her family dearly. In addition to her parents Robert and Carrie (Diggs) Patterson, her brothers and sisters Alice, George, Marie, Howard, Charles, Frank, Arthur, Alberta, Alma and Doris precede her in death. As each one passed, Mama mourned the loss deeply. My father, Ralph E. Scott was the love of her life. They were married for 49 years until the time of his death on September 13, 1991. My brother, Ralph Jr. died in Mom's arms when he was but an infant. Daddy was away in the navy and she had to endure this awful loss without him. Seven years later and almost two months premature, I came along. I think my parents went a little crazy after I was born. Mom's uncle, Dr. Arthur Diggs, sent me home to die. My parents decided otherwise. Mom would say "I love you better than my own life". I am Lynne Scott-Rotonda. My husband, Joseph A. Rotonda and my sons, Kevin M. and Michael L. Scott are left to cherish the memory of our "Bob". We called her that because when baby Kevin heard "grandma" it came out "Bah Bah". This became "Bob" in the ensuing years. Mom cherished the sister who survives her, Mrs. Hershel (June) Long. June was born the day Mama turned nine years old and she considered June to be HER baby. There are so many others: my former husband, Michael L. Scott (now deceased), the spouses of her brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins. My mother loved them all. After leaving her hometown of Coalton Ohio, Mom worked as an assistant to Dr. Diggs. She then worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Booker Harris. Her next employment was at Mt. Carmel Hospital intake in the ER. She worked in security for the State of Ohio, as a house manager at the Hamilton House in Gahanna and finally in the latchkey program at Immaculate Conception Church. Wherever Mom went, she was the star of the show, the Belle of the Ball. She was a beloved character. Mom loved the song "You and Me Against the World" because it illustrates the relationship we shared: And when one of us is gone And one is left behind to carry on Then remembering will have to do Memories alone will get us through Think about the days of me and you You and me against the world I am left here Mama, I will carry on and will forever cherish the memories of me and you. I can only hope that when people see me, they get a glimpse of you. If so, that would be a good thing. Good bye my best, sweet friend. You were a great mother; I am so proud that you were mine.
