Fred "Floyd" Newell age 89, passed peacefully Wednesday, June 18, 2025. Fred was born in Millwood, WV on April 7, 1936, to the late Floyd and Pearl Newell. Fred was a man of deep faith. He accepted the Lord and was baptized in Big Walnut Creek in December 1963. After graduating from Point Pleasant High School in 1955, Fred joined the US Army and traveled throughout Europe. After leaving the military, Fred bought a motorcycle and traveled around the USA. Fred then settled in Columbus, Ohio and then met his wife, Mida Maynard Newell. They married in 1963 and had 3 daughters, Naomi, Deborah "Dee-Dee" and Kimberly. After his wife died in 1973, Fred bravely raised his daughters. He had many adventures learning to cook, clothes shopping, laundry and going through the dating phase with his girls. He taught all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to love the outdoors. He especially loved hunting, hiking, gardening, and fishing. After retiring from Western Electric/Lucent, Fred continued working. He chose Auto Zone because they gave him 6 weeks off a year for hunting. Fred was a very active volunteer to the end with ODNR every year. He taught hunter safety courses, archery at the Ohio State Fair, NRA Youthfest, and youth activies with the Pickaway County Sportmans Club and Lancaster Coon Hunters Club. He especially enjoyed teaching young kids archery and guns and fishing. Fred married Jessie Taulbee on March 29, 1991. Fred was a master woodworker and won many ribbons at the Circleville Pumpkin Show. He loved building homes and built several of his own houses. He built many toys for his children and grandchildren which they still love. He built beautiful grandfather clocks for those he loved. As an avid hunter, he leaves behind a beautiful trophy room of deer, squirrels, and his pride the wild turkey. He proudly displayed his Robin Hood Arrows. He loved teaching his grandchildren and great grandchildren about archery in his basement archery range, where he still practiced. Fred will be loved and missed by the many lives he touched along the way. Fred is preceded in death by parents, Floyd and Pearl Newell; wife, Mida Maynard Newell; daughter, Deborah Kay Newell; grandson, Christopher Allen White; brother, Bill Newell; sister, Jean Spears. Survived by daughters, Naomi Ann Newell and Kimberly Pearl (Steve Fields) Newell; wife, Jessie Taulbee; grandchildren, Cassie Robinson, Miranda (Michael) Vollman, Steven Bradley White, Eric (Allie) White, Gabriel (Sam) White, Stephanie Faith Lines and Heather Thorne; stepchildren, Craig and Michelle Vandivier; several great grandchildren; siblings, Joyce (Richard) Scarberry, James (Sandy) Newell and Stephen (Pam) Newell. Many, many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. The family will receive friends at O. R. WOODYARD CO. South Chapel, 1346 South High Street, Columbus, on Friday, June 27, 2025, from 4 to 7 pm., where the funeral service will be held Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 10 am. Pastors Roger Blackburn and Shawn Beauchamp officiating. Burial will follow at Obetz Cemetery. Fred requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Research Hospital in his memory.
