Fung Kwai Mar, age 98.98, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2021. Born January 19, 1922, in Toisan, Guangdong, China, Fung was a professional palm-reader. However, China's Cultural Revolution directed Fung's life in a different direction. After having family assets stripped and many professions prohibited, Fung then split her time between Guangdong and Hong Kong. With an even brighter promise of the future, Fung emigrated to the United States in 1971 and earned her citizenship in 1989. In the country she loved and lived for the rest of her life, she made many friends and often enjoyed her time fishing, playing mahjong, being at the casinos, and traveling on cruises. The Cultural Revolution that shaped her life also shaped Fung's generous personality and beliefs. Food was scarce during the Revolution, so Fung always shared with others whatever food she had or cooked, which was one of her ways of expressing how much she cared for you. Money was confiscated by the government during the Revolution, so Fung would frequently give away traditional Chinese red envelops with money inside, sometimes even making up excuses as to why she was giving one. Education was prohibited during the Revolution, so Fung always taught her kids and grandkids the importance of learning, explaining that the knowledge that resides in you is one thing the government nor anyone else can ever take away from you. Fung is preceded in death by her first husband Sui Si Chan, second husband Richard Mar, and brother Wing Chee Lee. She is survived by her siblings Wing Chi Lee and Vivian Lee; children and children-in-law Shing Bun Chan, Kim Dip Chan, Winnie Chan, Andy Chan and Hang Ling Chan, Hang Yi Chan, Selina Chan, Sandy Chan and Yoyo Tang; grandchildren Sherry Chan, Agnes Chan, Betty Chan, Nilsa Lam, and Ashley Tang. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will have a private, in-person funeral on January 16, 2021 with a virtual gathering welcomed via mobile devices. The funeral will be at Woodyard's South Chapel and the burial ceremony will be at Eastlawn Cemetery, both located in Columbus, Ohio. In the spirit of Fung's generous personality of giving, her family collectively suggests in lieu of flowers to make a contribution to the Sherry S. Chan Actuarial Endowment (search for Fund #483560 at www.osu.edu/giving), a fund set up at The Ohio State University that will provide students the gift of education, via scholarships, so they too can pursue a bright future, much like Fung's American Dream when she moved to this country.
