Gayle Hall Miller, a high school Spanish teacher for 35 years, most of that time in the Columbus area, died suddenly on Wednesday, August 14. She was 69.

The daughter of Robert Kettering Hall and Maryn Foley Hall, herself a lifelong teacher, Gayle was born on Feb. 13, 1955. She is survived by her big sister Lynne, her best friend and confidant throughout her life.

Born in Bryan, Ohio, where her parents then lived, she was a product of Edgerton (Ohio) High School. During her school days she was a cheerleader and a good friend of many, who remained in her orbit for decades. She joked that it was unfortunate that she no longer could get the weekly Edgerton Earth to find out who had dinner with the Kimples, a local family who was responsible for the "society" page.

After graduation, she enrolled at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She felt she flowered there, studying Spanish and Education while attending football games and parties.

After earning her Bachelor's, she pursued a job in education, taking the highest-paying job she could in Bucyrus, Ohio. (That "highest-paying" job paid less than five figures in the late 1970s.)

One night at a Bucyrus basketball game, one of her many friends pointed to the sports editor of the local newspaper, the Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum, who was at courtside covering the game, as an eligible bachelor and dating material. When he came to the scorer's table at halftime to cross-check some figures, she freshened her hair and makeup and then said hello. But, thinking she was a high school student, the sports writer repelled her advances. Only later did he discover that she was a teacher and not a student.

This began an extended relationship, with years of laughs and good times. When Rusty Miller left town to take a job as assistant sports editor, Penn State writer and columnist at the York (Pa.) Daily Record, they continued writing letters. Eventually, they married on Oct. 10, 1981.

Gayle taught part-time in several schools in Pennsylvania before her husband followed his career to the Columbus Citizen-Journal in 1984 and then The Associated Press in 1985. She taught at Upper Arlington and Grandview Heights High Schools before settling into her perfect position at Dublin and then Dublin Scioto High School, teaching next door to her friends Barbara Law and Holly Hall. Gayle frequently took classes to Spain during her tenure. Dozens of her former students became her longtime friends.

Both Gayle and Rusty retired in May of 2015 and celebrated their new lives with a crazy weekend with friends Bob and Vicki Baptist and their family and friends, in Nashville, Tenn.

Restless after retiring, Gayle found a second career working for a sorority _ make that HER sorority _ based in Upper Arlington, Delta Gamma. She loved befriending so many of the young women and men who also worked for DG. She took pride in reaching out to members across the country and honoring those loyal ladies who had passed on. And now she will also be remembered.

Gayle and Rusty's marriage lasted almost 44 years. Along the way they had two wonderful children of which she was extremely proud, first, Betsy in 1987, and then Mac, in 1990. Betsy married Rich Tolisano in 2018 and Gayle was thrilled when their union produced the true loves of her life, grandchildren Ava (aged 3 ½ -- don't you DARE call her 3!) and Emmett (9 months). If any of her

many friends mentioned their grandchildren, Gayle was quick to pull out her iPhone to show, oh, maybe a zillion shots of her grandkids.

A grieving Rusty, Betsy, Rich, Mac, Ava and Emmett all survive and will struggle with her loss.

She and her husband traveled the world over her almost 10 years of retirement, visiting England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Germany, France (Paris was a favorite), all of Canada, Spain, Morocco, Portugal, Italy and, in September 2023, Prague, Budapest, Vienna and Oktoberfest in Munich, which was a particularly good time.

Everywhere she went, she made friends, that could be running in for a half gallon of milk at Kroger while her husband (im)patiently waited in the car, working at her variety of fulfilling jobs, doing trivia at Coaches Bar & Grill where she spent every Wednesday night teaming with her friends Barbara and Holly among, participating in her book clubs and swapping gossip at family gatherings. She will be sorely missed and remembered by all.

She will be memorialized at OR Woodyard Funeral Home, 2990 Bethel Rd., Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. Visitation will be from 12-2 p.m., with the service starting at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers or donations, Gayle would ask all of her friends and family to just hug a loved one.
