VAN METER George David Van Meter, age 80, passed away on Feb. 18, 2012 at Scioto Community. He was born August 15, 1931 and was the son of the late Harry B. and Grace B. Van Matre, and last surviving brother to Pete, Ginny, Elizabeth, Richard, Betty, John Mack, Dorothy, Norma, and Alice Mae of West Columbia, Mason County,WV. Preceded in death by first wife, Doris W. Van Meter (Hunt) of Evans, WV. Survived by son, Richard (Julie) Van Meter of Carroll, OH; daughter, Brenda (Gene) Chaffin of Hamburg, NY; grandchildren, Alexander, Emily, Bryan, Donald, Scott, and Angela; many nieces and nephews including Gilda (Harold) Herb, Jack (Elaine) Johnson, and Sharon (John) Thomas. George was a mechanic apprentice to Alvin Mathena of Point Pleasant, WV and a friend to Leroy Rice, Harry Simpkins, Hank Fette, and Billy McCoy. George earned a self-study degree in electronics. George worked 19 years at United McGill in Columbus as a code welder, among many friends including Jim T, Jess, Roger, Cooper, Tony, Tim, Jim B, Fred, L.Lyons, Roy Moss, neighbors, Dana and Danny, and many others. George also attended Lockbourne Freewill Baptist and the Lighthouse Church on S. High St. Friends may call at the O. R. WOODYARD CO. CHAPEL 1346 S. High St., Wednesday 5-8 p.m. where the funeral service will be held Thursday 10 a.m. Pastor Bill Lavely officiating. Interment will follow at the Kirkland Memorial Gardens, near West Columbia, WV. As George always loved dogs, donations may be made in lieu of flowers on-line to the American Humane Association.
