Obituary

Hazel Forbis, age 91, of Groveport, OH, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17th, 2015. Preceded in death by her loving husband and best friend of 57 years, Ivan Forbis, parents James and Nancy Sharp, brothers Okey and Orville, sisters Edna Pignatillo, Mary Weaver, and Minnie Sharp. Survived by son, Ivan J.; daughters Cheryl (Donald) Leslein and Marylee (Chuck) Bendig. Hazel was especially proud to be grandmother to her 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and ten great-great grandchildren. Hazel cherished her time with relatives and relationships with her many, many friends. Born in the coal-mining town of Long Branch, WV, Hazel's humble upbringing led to her passion for helping others and what would be a lifetime of volunteerism. She began volunteering at Alum Crest Nursing home in the early 1970's and it was in 1972 that she joined Courage Incorporated as an aide and eventually would become a board member before they disbanded in 2005. Much of Hazel's work with Courage Incorporated centered around assisting disabled individuals, particularly in efforts to increase their quality of life through entertaining and hosting many backyard swim parties at her home in the south end of Columbus. No person or guest in Hazel's house ever went hungry as she loved to share her joy of cooking. Hazel also enjoyed entertaining as a clown for the Marion Square Seniors as well as performing other services for many additional charitable organizations. Most recently, Hazel's work served as the inspiration in the opening of Hazel's House of Hope, now serving in multiple locations. Always known for her sense of fashion, she was also a cosmetologist, licensed in 1962 from Capitol Beauty School and had an in-home beauty salon for many years. Although Hazel will be sorely missed, she truly had a blessed life and has left a lasting legacy. Her example of living life to the fullest while making time to serve others will inspire those for years to come. Friends may call Friday 5-8 p.m. at O.R. WOODYARD CO, 1346 S. High St., Columbus, OH 43207, where a Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Barbara Wood Salyers will be officiating. Interment Walnut Hill Cemetery.
