Obituary

Hursel A. Sayre passed away December 22, 2020. He was born August 16, 1924 in Mason Co., WV to the late Isaac A. Sayre and Almira Gray Sayre. Hursel is preceded in death by wife, June Blackburn Sayre as well as brothers, Russell, Bill, and Robert and sisters Jo, Marie, and Lucille. He is survived by children, David Sayre and Sharon (Edward) Highfield; grandchildren, Dana, Matthew, Isaac, Hannah, Caleb, and Rebekah, along with six great grandchildren, other family and friends. Hursel was a longtime member of the Heritage Free Will Baptist Church. A graveside service at Franklin Hills Memory Garden will be held Monday, December 28, at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Tim Stout officiating. While Hursel was born in WV, he and the entire Sayre family moved to central Ohio early on, and he was always a son of the South end. His youth was interrupted by World War II and he served in the Army, landing on Omaha beach in France on D-Day+6. That experience shaped the rest of his life and his desire to live quietly. His joy in life was his wife ,June, whom he married soon after his return from Germany and they remained together for 74 years until her passing in 2019. She made a house into a home, and that was all he ever really wanted. Hursel was a tireless diesel mechanic and general workman, unafraid to tackle any job - even things he shouldn't have. His accomplishments included the two houses which he built and lived in for more than 60 years. Hursel enjoyed playing guitar and singing. He participated in his local church and traveled Ohio, WV, and KY singing in quartets early in his adult years. Hursel was most at home in his garage, surrounded by his tools and the problems of the day. He was a strong, quiet man who was happy with a good meal, a new set of work boots, a ball cap and a good night's sleep. He typically ended his days early with a booming prayer on his knees for his family, especially children and grandchildren. Hursel is the last of his generation on either side of the family and he will be missed as the man who could always be depended upon.
