Jimmy Joe
Hatfield, Sr.
Mar 30, 1939 — Mar 10, 2025
Jimmy Joe Hatfield, Sr. passed away peacefully from this life to the only true paradise on March 10, 2025, from natural causes at the age of 85.
Jimmy was born March 30, 1939, son of a coal miner and direct descendent from the Hatfields of the historic Hatfield and McCoy feud. He grew up in Logan, West Virginia along the Guyandotte River. He graduated with honors from Man High School in 1957. He then went to Nashville, Tennessee and worked as a parking attendant at the Grand Ol' Opry while attending automobile and diesel mechanic school.
In 1959 he came to Ohio for work where he met the love of his life and mother of his 3 children, Freda Jameson. He retired from Operating Engineers Local 18 as a heavy-duty machine operator and mechanic in 1998. In 1982 he purchased Southgate Lounge and operated it for over 20 years. His favorite hobby was working. He was an exceptional mechanic and there truly wasn't an engine he couldn't fix.
During his younger years he spent weekends water skiing with family and friends. He loved being outdoors. He fed squirrels and birds from his front porch and planted a tomato garden each Spring. He was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed watching sports, The Three Stooges, Gun Smoke, and Joseph Prince. He also liked listening to bluegrass music.
Jimmy is preceded in death by parents, Bruce and Ruby (Hinchman) Hatfield; brother, Bobby Reed Hatfield; and son, Richard Kevin Hatfield.
He is survived by his son, Jimmy Joe Hatfield Jr. and daughter, Sherry (John) Nichols; grandchildren, Megan (Neil) Schoenblum, James Eric, Chelsea, James Sterling, Joy, and Emma; great grandchildren, Logan, Bailey, Cooper, Novalee, Chase, Chevy, Sabrina, and Charles; also his puppies Sam and Dale.
Visitation for Jimmy will be Friday, March 14, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1:30 p.m. at the O.R. WOODYARD CO. South Chapel, 1346 S. High St. in Columbus, OH. Pastor Brian Humphrey will officiate.
The family's hearts are filled with gratitude for the friends, family, and wonderful Summit Hospice team who helped take care of Jimmy for the last few months so that he could remain at home where he wanted to be.
