Josephine "Josie" Chase, 91 of Columbus, formerly Lorain, Ohio passed peacefully on Wednesday, August 12 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Josie was born April 15, 1929 in Lorain, OH to the late Aleck P. and Smaro Zaferakes. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Thomas L. Chase. She is survived by her son, Lee Thomas Chase and grandson, Geno Chase of Columbus. Josie graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, OH in 1952 and began teaching in the elementary school systems in Lorain, Elyria and then Columbus. Her last several years teaching were at the Kindergarten level where she was praised for her effective skills, love of music and nurturing spirit. Josie was an accomplished and recognized musician, primarily piano and organ, a talent she shared both in her classrooms and church choirs for many years. She was also active as a local and national officer in various professional, religious and Hellenic groups. She served as national president of the "Daughters of Penelope," an organization of Greek women affiliated with AHEPA. Josie also chaired numerous activities in her lifetime and was very involved in organizing many fund-raising activities related to friends in political positions as well as those within the Greek Orthodox church. As recently as months ago, she continued her volunteering at the church. The funeral will be held Tuesday August 25, 2020 at 10 a.m. in the Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
