Obituary

Patricia (Hill) Girod, 77, of Columbus, OH, passed away peacefully in Riverside Methodist Hospital on Sunday, January 23, 2011 from complications following brain cancer surgery on December 10. She was born an only child on March 1, 1933 in Providence, RI to Chief Warrant Officer (U. S. Navy) James D. Hill and Mary Edith Campbell, both preceding her in death. She graduated from Annapolis MD High School in June 1950 and began a brief career with Nationwide Insurance Co. She married Ensign Roy Girod on December 5, 1953 in Annapolis and embarked on a new and exciting career as the consummate Navy Wife and Stay at Home Mom. She is survived by Roy, her husband of 57 years, her four children, Bruce, Robert (Terri), Susan Baum (Michael), all of Columbus, and Catherine Girod of Los Angeles, CA; granddaughters Robin and Carrie, and great-grandchildren Cole and Adrienne. Patricia made friends easily and quickly became a part of each community where the Navy took her. She was a very proud Life Member of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association (Spouse), a life member of the Navy League of the U.S., a member of the Naval Academy Alumni Association Columbus Chapter, an active member and advisor of the USNA Parents Club of Central Ohio, the Columbus Area Military Wives Club, the Naval Officers Wives Club and the Military Officers Club of Central Ohio. She loved the Navy where she leaves a very large circle of close friends. In addition to her close relationships with her high school classmates in Annapolis, she became an integral member of her husband's Naval Academy Class of 1953 and his high school class (1949) in Worland, WY. She loved to help others and is well known for the many kindnesses toward friends and new acquaintances. She had a sense of just the right things to do and say. Patricia's remains will be cremated by the O.R. Woodyard Funeral Home and be interred in the Columbarium at the U. S. Naval Academy. A Memorial service celebrating her life, followed by a reception with refreshments will be held at the Whetstone Park of Roses, 4015 Olentangy Boulevard, Columbus at Noon on Saturday, February 5 with the Reverend Herbert Goetz (Captain, Chaplain Corps, US Navy, Retired) officiating. Patricia's many friends and guests are welcome and encouraged to attend. She will be with you in spirit. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local chapter of the Salvation Army, the charity Patricia felt most deserving of support.
