Ralph H. Winslow, 84, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010. He was born September 12, 1926, to William and Margaret (Stuart) Winslow in Terre Haute, Indiana. He retired as a chemist from US Steel-Gary Works in 1983. He was predeceased by his parents and Chris Rosato, his granddaughter's husband. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Boling; four sons, Ralph, Jr. (Deb) of Cincinnati, Paul of Terre Haute, William of Shelbyville, IN, and John (Jane) of Richland, Washington; five grandchildren, Jennifer Rosato, Robert (Meghyn), Kristina, Cameron, and Allison; two great-grandchildren, Marley and Solomon; two brothers, William (Barbara) and Hugh (Carol) both of Evansville, IN; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. at O.R. Woodyard Northwest Chapel located at 2990 Bethel Rd, Columbus, OH. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made in his name to the University of Illinois Foundation, Harker Hall, 1305 West Green St, Urbana, IL 61801-2962. Ralph attended Indiana State University, then graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He was also in the Navy while attending the University of Illinois, intending to go to flight school afterwards. However, by the time he graduated, WWII had ended and he was retired from the Navy rather than going on to flight school. He began his career as a chemist at Campbells in Terre Haute, then continued on to Cities Service and Continental Filling in Northwest Indiana. He completed his career at US Steel-Gary Works as a chemical laboratory supervisor. While at US Steel, he obtained his MBA at Indiana University Northwest, attending along with his oldest son, Ralph, Jr. After his retirement, Ralph used his carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills to rehab a house. He also used those skills many times to build a garage, to add a bathroom, to install ceiling fans, and much, much more. When his sons were growing up, he taught them how to repair bicycles and how to rebuild cars, even taking parts from two cars that were not road-worthy and building one functional car. Sometimes at family gatherings, a game of Trivial Pursuit would be mentioned. There were reminders by all to Dad / Grandpa that the answer on the card was the correct answer, as he would frequently question the card's accuracy, or he would sometimes add qualifications. He loved Mac Davis's song "It's Hard to be Humble" when you're perfect in every way … and most of the time we could count on Ralph's judgment. When we moved to our home on Hanna Hills, we found that there was room for a vegetable garden in our back yard. Ralph was enthusiastic about that garden; however, he was warned by the neighbors that the deer would destroy any garden he tried to grow. He said, "Not my garden", and he proceeded to build a six-foot fence around the garden and included a fenced roof over that garden as he was determined that the deer would not get his garden! Ralph was also a friend to his neighbors, providing any assistance as needed, such as snow-blowing driveways or providing help with rewiring projects. As he had almost every tool known to man, he was the go-to guy for those who needed help. Perhaps one of his most useful pieces of equipment was his concrete mixer - who would have thought. Most recently he could be seen riding his bicycle twice daily through the neighborhood or walking Lottie, our neighbor's dog, at noon everyday. He worked three crossword puzzles everyday (in ink), loved The Price is Right, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune, and could still cook a wonderful meal.
